Re: Favourite koi.Hi All,
My favourite koi was a Dainichi showa, the koi was bought as a grow and show back in 2007 and at the time I had only been keeping koi for two years so the whole process of selecting and keeping the fish was a huge learning curve for me, and i got a huge amount of pleasure from watching the koi develope. The fish was 18cm when selected and 61cm when she was sold in 2010.
Re: Favourite koi.Hi Alex,
My favourite koi has to be a showa I bought from Fujio Oomo in 2008 I left it to grow on for 2 years in Japan and is now a very nice koi indeed, but I have to say I also have a strong liking for a gin rin kohaku don't really know why but perhaps the skin quality and striking Hi are what catches my eye. Regards, Andy
Re: Favourite koi.Hi Andy,
I do like a good kohaku and the gin rin realy stand out in the pond to, thats a nice showa you have there what size is she now?. Here's a rather poor pic of a hoshkin kohaku I bought not all that long before the pond was closed down, I have to say that although the skin and the white ground was outstanding, in the year that she was inn my pond the hi on the back of the head was starting to break down and it looked like she was going to go mauritan, it would have been nice to see what way she went. Cheers, Garry.
Re: Favourite koi.Garry,
The showa is approaching 60 cm. and is almost 5 years old, I do like a good kohaku but am always put off with the thought of shimis, it is a shame to see such lovely koi completely destroyed by this, I know some if not all can be removed by gentle scraping, but is the stress caused to the koi worth the effort? not in my mind anyway. the koi will always come first with me. Andy.
Re: Favourite koi.here are a couple of mine whats your thoughts
dont let your mother inlaw feed your koi
Re: Favourite koi.Kevin,
The skin quality on your Kohaku looks fantastic, body shape is also nice, not to sure if the Hi on the pec would count against it probably not, your showa looks very young and hard to judge how it will turn out, the Sumi looks well advanced already although that may stay as the koi grows. Andy.
Re: Favourite koi.Hi Kevin,
That kohaku's fantastic It's a pitty about the hi on the pec but you might be lucky, It could be secondry and it may fade in time, The showa looks like a male and the hi and sumi are both well developed for such a young koi, my worry would be that it's finished as far as developments concerened, when you read about picking a showa they say that you should look for strong sumi on the tail of the koi and that the sumi thickens from the tail towards the head, the sumi on your showa looks like it's thickining from the head back towards the tail, it will be interesting to see how it developes and it certinly looks good right now. cheers, Garry.
Re: Favourite koi...this is my personal favourite its a kage showa from isa ...........bought it as jumbo nisai from uk nishikigoi ...its doing really well
