pond build

Postby ARBROATHSMOKIE4 » Thu Jan 26, 2012 12:30 am

Hi All,
I know some of you are considering building a new pond, so I thought it would be good to discuss what type of filtration you are considering to use and if you have any preferences as regards UV clarifies, eg. Bio uv or just the normal Uv , also would you be looking at a trickle through flow which I know is fast becoming the norm.

Regards,
Andy.

Well Andy its getting warmer and nearing the time to start my new pond. my new pond will be around 4000 gallons more at a push. block with fibreglass. four inch bottom drain (spin drifter) to a 210 nexus. A 1500 sequence pump through a 55 u.v then a heater then back to the ponds returns (four fitted so i can change the flow direction). A wall skimmer running into an easy pod then into an other sequence 1500 to a Bakki shower to the pond. this will all be covered in with a polycarbonate roof insulated walls and acrylic front and doors. Oh and a quarantine tank in the filter room. :D

Alex,
You may get many different views on this, when I first got into koi I was always told that counter flow in different directions was best,
so I have inlets at both ends of my pond, also a good strong air flow from a bottom drain helps to create cross flow which in turn means the koi get to swim against a flow in all directions, koi that go round and round in never ending circles do run the risk of a bent spine and I have seen such a koi which displayed this defect, koi that swim against the current and swim with much more power will be good strong muscle bound koi and not the lazy fat koi that are fed lots of food but cant work off the extra fat! John eluded to that on Sunday at the meeting, my air in the pond is never altered all year round with added air in summer to cope with the high temp of around 24c, the oxygen level in warm water will drop quite dramatically in summer months.
I have heard of some people who turn off the air flow in there pond in summer and only leave it on for 2 hours or so in day time saying they cant see the koi, what is best koi that are alive and swiming or koi that are DEAD?!!
Andy.
